Lеаkу gut syndrome, also called Increased Gut Permeability, a diѕоrdеr саuѕеd by thе increased lеаkinеѕѕ оf intеѕtinаl mucosal mеmbrаnе, can have ѕоmе serious consequences if lеft unattended. Physicians think that treatment орtiоnѕ аrе diverse and limited in efficiency. They also think that there is ѕtill ѕоmе advantage tо соntrоlling or mаnаging thiѕ gаѕtrоintеѕtinаl problem whеn it comes tо рrеvеnting complications lаtеr оn.

What sticks out are the words “limited efficiency” and “controlling or managing” this problem. My personal experience shows leaky gut, which lead to the development of the autoimmune immune disease Hashimoto Thyroiditis, and severe food sensitivities, can be healed. After eliminating the foods my body was reacting to, especially eggs, eradicating pathogens, implementing meditation, using herbal supplements and spore biotics to support my bodies ability to heal the gut, I can report that I do NOT have any GI problems anymore. But back to the consequences of leaky gut.

What could pass the gut lining and enter the hepatic portal vein?

  • Toxins, environmental; from bacteria and viruses
  • Larger, partially digested food particles
  • Histamine
  • Zonulin, Bacteria secret toxins and can alter tight junctions.

The increased gut permeability happens at the microvilli, which are finger like structures and single layer of cells. The microvilli reach into the gut and have the job to let the nutrients and vitamins, extracted from digested food, into the blood stream which leads to the hepatic portal vein. This vein brings the nutrients, vitamins, and toxins into the liver for detoxification.

In a healthy gut the single cell layer of the microvilli are held together with proteins called tight junctions. When digested food reaches the microvilli, the tight junctions loosen up just so much that the nutrients can get into the blood stream. Zonulin regulate the opening and closing of the tight junctions.

The question then is How can we prevent and heal a Leaky Gut?

  • Identify and Remove inflammatory foods from your diet

MRT food sensitivity test, IgG, IgM, IgE antigen blood test

      • Eat organic foods if possible to avoid chemicals. At least wash fruits and vegetables with water and vinegar. Peal fruits.
      • Drink enough water to prevent dehydration. Water is necessary for phase II detoxification.
      • Identify and Remove pathogens in the gut, such as parasites using a stool pathogen test. Blood tests for virus antibodies. CBC with diff to check if the immune system is overactive.

    • Reduce Stress: don’t over commit, learning to say NO can be very important.
    • Reduce EMF exposure; turn wifi off at night (Check out my Youtube channel on this subject)
    • Don’t use a cell phone and/or computer at night before you go to bed. The blue light emitted by the screen of those devices prohibit melatonin production.
    • Sleep in a dark, cool room

Candida – Can you free yourself ?

Candida overgrowth is not recognized as a real health issue; therefore, most physicians don’t test for it.

However, you are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Bloating
  • Brain fog, difficulty concentrating and/or focusing
  • Fatigue, tired all the time
  • Sugar cravings
  • Sinus congestion
  • Headaches
  • Skin irritations, acne, rashes
  • Depression, mood swings, even anxiety
  • Vaginal itching

Everyone has Candida yeast in the gut, mouth and vagina. Candida is not all bad, as it helps with digestion and nutrient absorption.  Other gut bacteria need to be kept in check, otherwise we end up with Candida overgrowth and once we have reached this point, we develop symptoms.

Causes of Candida overgrowth

Candida is called an opportunistic organism, which means it will get out of control like a child or teenager left alone at home. We need adults at home, which are other good bacteria to keep Candida in check. So, if there is an imbalance between the good and bad bacteria in the gut, called Dysbiosis, Candida will do what it does best; multiply.

This brings us to the next question:

What are the causes of Dysbiosis of the microflora?

  • Toxins from the environment
  • Heavy metals
  • Stress, lifestyle stressors, not enough sleep, poor diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates
  • Antibiotics
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Adrenal issues, too much or too little cortisol
  • Parasite infection

How to get rid of Candida?

Well, we never can get rid of Candida, but we can get rid of Candida overgrowth.

As a Functional Diagnostic Practitioner, I look at underlying causes of symptoms. In the case of Candida overgrowth, I know that it is not the problem, but it is the result of the underlying problem.

Most of the time, the immune system is compromised and bacterial dysbiosis in the gut, due to a lack of supervision so to speak, creates the opportunity for Candida to grow uncontrollably.

  • Candida lives on sugar and refined carbohydrates. In order to starve it, food items that contain those sugars need to be eliminated.
  • In regard to the dysbiosis, we need to heal the gut, which includes balancing the gut flora.
  • I mentioned stressors as the cause of Candida overgrowth; therefore, we need to look at those and eliminate as many as possible.

Takeaway: if you think you have Candida overgrowth and you follow one of those protocols to kill Candida offered online, it may not work for you in the long run.

My approach as a Functional Diagnostic Practitioner:

  • Starving Candida with a sugar and starch free diet.
  • Eating “Real” Foods such as grass fed beef, eggs from free roaming chicken not fed with grains, replenish minerals and vitamins and healthy fats.
  • Stress reduction: Identifying inside stressors such as parasites and bacterial dysbiosis and correcting the problem with the help of herbal supplements. Identifying external stressors such as the influence of a negative person in one’s life, environmental toxins.
  • Sleep hygiene. Going to bed around 10pm.
  • Exercise: not everyone can go to the gym 3-5 times a week. Some are just too weak to even walk around the block. Whatever exercise you can perform is the one you could start out with.
  • Biofilm disrupter: this is huge. All bacteria in the gut or sinuses block the immune system from reaching it by creating a biofilm. Most of the time, biofilms are several layers thick and are hard to break open.
  • Identifying pathogens and getting rid of those with herbal supplements.
  • Supplementation with antifungals to kill Candida.
  • Gut healing supplements: they repair the mucosal barrier in the gut lining
  • Probiotics play a big role in balancing the intestinal flora; they even help to digest food and produce nutrients.

7 Steps to Regain Thyroid Health

Thyroid problems, such as hypothyroidism or an autoimmune thyroid condition, are never just the result of one or two causal factors; they stem from a number of different causes.

Therefore, in order to overcome thyroid issues, a complex approach is necessary.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto Thyroiditis in 2009 and developed multiple health issues which left me unable to care for myself. All of this changed when I started looking at underlying causes as to why my immune system and my adrenal glands were overactive.

Lets take a look at what Symptoms are:

Symptoms appear last, after the body begins to develop malfunction. Therefore, nothing that will “treat” a particular symptom will support the body in its quest to reach homeostasis again.

What we actually need to do is search for

underlying causes of symptoms

What makes this oftentimes a difficult task is the fact that the same symptom can have different causes in different people.

For example, take headaches. Say you are suffering every day from a headache; could it be because you are dehydrated or because of stress in your life, or do you have food sensitivities?

Create a game plan

You know yourself better than anyone else. If you don’t feel well and any approach you or your doctor have tried didn’t make a difference, then you  need to take matters into your own hands and seek help from someone who listens to you and knows what to do to get you feeling better.

  1. Change your diet  to a gluten free, dairy free, nightshade free diet. Your immune system will have a better chance to calm down. Oftentimes, TPO antibodies go down as well.
  1. Heal Leaky Gut
  • Find out if you have a parasite and /or Candida overgrowth.
  • Tackle biofilm. Parasites, bad bacteria, Candida, and viruses all hide from the immune system by wrapping themselves in layers of cells called biofilm.

Hippocrates said

All disease starts in the gut.

Today, with the study of the microbiome, we know that this statement is very true. We have more bacteria in the gut than cells in our body. We also don’t have enough genes to perform all functions in our body. So, the question arose — who is actually performing those functions our body can’t? Your gut bacteria take on those jobs.

Dysbiosis of the gut microbiome (meaning an imbalance of good versus bad bacteria) can lead to a whole host of health issues. The good guys in your digestive system help:

  • Keep the bad guys in check
  • Train the immune system
  • Produce digestive enzymes
  • Produce vitamin K2
  • Keep the mucosal lining intact

Therefore, choose your probiotic wisely. Only a spore-based probiotic survives the harsh environment in the GI tract.

  1. Adrenal issues are basically HPA axis issues.  The Hypothalamus – Pituitary- Adrenal axis sends hormonal messages from one gland to the other to stimulate or reduce hormone production. There are a number of adaptogenic herbs which can be very helpful, such as Ashwagandha and Holy Basil.

  1. Blood sugar issues can lead to adrenal issues and lack of sleep. We all know that our body needs sleep to be ready for the next day.
  • Get a glucose meter to monitor your blood sugar and adjust your diet accordingly.
  • Eat a protein rich breakfast.
  • Eat protein snacks in between meals such as nuts, seeds.
  • Stick to healthy fats such as coconut oil and olive oil.
  • Eat fiber rich foods.

  1. Check for mineral imbalances with a hair analysis.    Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis
  • The Calcium/Potassium ratio and the single levels of those minerals are very important for thyroid function. This ratio gives us the trend of thyroid dysfunction. A blood test oftentimes looks “normal” and, therefore, thyroid issues are dismissed.
  • Sodium, Magnesium, Selenium, Iron and Copper are also very important minerals for proper thyroid and adrenal function, and thyroid hormone conversion. You have to remember that the thyroid function will slow down when the adrenal gland function slows down.
  1. Methylation issues can occur with the presence of gene mutations. We need cofactors, vitamins and minerals, for proper function. Having gene mutations doesn’t mean that your gene doesn’t produce adequate amount of enzymes. It all depends on your lifestyle, the diet you eat, the toxic load on your body, etc. With proper nutrition, gene mutations can be bypassed. Vitamin B6, 12, and folate are very important for the immune system and brain function. The gene test, 23andme, can be ordered online if you are interested in the status of your gene mutations.
  1. Get a blood test. A chemical panel and a complete blood count will give you a lot of information about hydration status, infections markers, and liver enzyme function. Only a functional analysis of the blood test result will look at patterns. Looking at single high or low blood markers doesn’t tell you anything and only leads to “treating” the test result. Only when blood levels fall into the optimal ranges can the body can start to heal itself.

The bottom line is to pay attention to stress. You can identify and minimize a lot of external stressors, and with the help of a professional, using functional lab tests, you can find internal stressors.

With the removal or reduction of stress, the whole body has a chance to recover.

This has been a year of learning experiences. I have gone to several doctors over the years. And each time I have come away frustrated with all of them. They don’t listen or they hear what they want.
